What are they made of?
Manufactured monuments consist of a core of polystyrene that is formed into the sign shape using computer controlled cutting equipment. The lightweight polystyrene is impervious to the elements; it will not decay or breakdown in any way.
This core material is encapsulated in a spray applied urethane elastomer. This is the same material used in car bumpers and provides an extremely tough, weatherproof shell. The impact resistance achieved with this material exceeds the standard used for the exterior walls on commercial buildings.
The final material is a textured acrylic finish. This material, which has been used with great success on commercial buildings since the 1960’s, provides a fine sand surface with a texture similar to limestone. The monument is installed on a flat site where the bottom can rest on grade and is supported against wind load by two engineered poles imbedded into concrete.
